AS maths review
The Association of Management Sciences (TAMS) responded as a body only to the first question in the survey - Is the 2:1 balance between core mathematics and applications in the proposals for the AS and A level Mathematics courses appropriate? TAMS is extremely concerned about the principle involved in the proposed change in A-level Mathematics away from a balance between pure and applied mathematics towards an emphasis on pure mathematics. TAMS considers that it is essential that all students sitting these public examinations should gain a significant understanding of the practical applications of mathematics, amd that this will not be achieved within just two modules; the exposure would be far too shallow. The very large majority of students will wish to use their mathematical skills in problem solving disciplines. It is essential that A-level courses should include a proper exposure to the rigour of using and applying mathematics in this way. The QCA must be aware of the significant shortfall in the number of people entering numerate disciplines. TAMS is of the view that the proposed change in the nature of A-level Mathematics specifications will exacerbate this problem. Offering what will be seen as an abstract subject is not likely to appear attractive to a large number of candidates. |
